Hands on, discovery learning was our focus in maths this month.
Students explored the properties of area using informal and formal methods. They were asked to estimate and then measure the area of their foot using square centimetres and then using this information estimate the area of their whole bodies. As an additional extension task, one group had to measure out and create a 1m x 1m square and then estimate large areas within our school. Their creativity in measuring those areas was fantastic.
The capacity tasks students undertook were all problem based practical activities. The whole classroom was converted into stations for students to explore the formal and informal ways to measure capacity. Activities such as this help students gain deep understanding of the concepts in maths to assist them in developing a love of learning. February
During February we focused our literacy on narrative writing and the importance of having a plan, editing, rewriting, having a teacher conference and then publishing. Our writer's notebook was very helpful when we were searching for ideas for our narratives.
Maths was fun as we played lots of hands on games, lots of computer games and yes, lots of ipad games (Mrs Currie loves games).
